Some more of the astro-piccies I took over the Summer 08 in the Snowies (Wyoming). These are more deep sky objects (Galaxies, the odd planetary nebula and globular clusters) I had meant to give a more detailed run down of the kit, and what it did, but never managed to get the footage. Will try to give a run down of the kit when I get back to the US. [Mas+detalle]

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has found the oldest burned-out stars in our Milky Way Galaxy. These extremely dim and old "clockwork stars" provide a completely independent reading of the age of the universe. By measuring the temperature of white dwarf stars in a globular star cluster, astronomers can estimate their ages. Hubble's sensitive detectors came up with an age of 12 to 13 billion years, dovetailing nicely with other independent measurements placing the universe's age at 13 to 14 billion years. [Mas+detalle]

This movie shows how the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope observes microlensing events in the globular cluster M22. Hubble (to the left) observes a faint background star in the Milky Way bulge (shown to the right) through the myriad stars of M22. The movie also shows how a possible 'free-floating' planet-sized object in M22 passes in front of the red background star and briefly magnifies its light. Note that the distances and sizes in this artist's rendering have been exaggerated for the sake of clarity. Also worth noting is that in the six actual Hubble observations the planet-sized objects were not visible in themselves, but only revealed their presence through their gravitational focussing of the light from the background stars. In each of the six microlensing events only one Hubble observation 'sampled' the brightening of the star. This means that the estimate for the mass of the planet-sized object will 'only' be an upper estimate (80 Earth-masses). Credit: ESA/Hubble (M. Kornmesser & L. L. Christensen) [Mas+detalle]

This animation shows how the Jovian planetary system in the outskirts of globular cluster M4, 13 billion years ago, travels to the core of the cluster. The star is drawn toward a neutron star and its companion. The slowly spinning neutron star captures the star and planet. Its original partner is ejected into space. The sun-like star swells to a red giant, spilling matter onto the neutron star. [Mas+detalle]
