This stop-motion video was shot and played for "LES URBAINES" festival http://www.urbaines.ch at the Palais de Rumine (Lausanne, Switzerland) on November 24th 2007.

"Douce Dame Jolie", sometimes referred to only as 'Douce Dame', is a song from the 14th century, by the French composer Guillaume de Machaut. The song is a virelai, belonging to the style ars nova, and is one of the most often heard medieval tunes today. Most modern recordings omits the lyrics, however.
One of the most famous musical pieces of the middle ages, 'Douce Dame' has been performed by a plethora of artists, mostly but not always in medieval style. Among others are Ayragon (with lyrics), Theo Bleckmann (with lyrics), Corvus Corax, Schelmish, Filia Irata, Två fisk och en fläsk (with lyrics), Wisby Vaganter, A La Via! (with lyrics), Blackmore's Night, Lisa Lynne, John Renbourn Group (with English lyrics) and Wolfenmond.

Guillaume de Machaut, sometimes spelled Machault, (c. 1300 -- April 1377), was an important Medieval French poet and composer. He is one of the earliest composers for whom significant biographical information is available.
Guilllaume de Machaut was "the last great poet who was also a composer," in the words of the scholar Daniel Leech-Wilkinson. Well into the 15th century, Machaut's poetry was greatly admired and imitated by other poets including the likes of Geoffrey Chaucer.
Machaut was and is the most celebrated composer of the 14th century (see Medieval music). He composed in a wide range of styles and forms and his output was enormous. He was also the most famous and historically significant representative of the musical movement known as the ars nova.
Machaut was especially influential in the development of the motet and the secular song (particularly the lai, and the formes fixes: rondeau, virelai and ballade). Machaut wrote the Messe de Nostre Dame, the earliest known complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass attributable to a single composer, and influenced composers for centuries to follow.

"Hail, star of the ocean". You will hear the first 2 "verses" of this piece. It starts with a chanted section followed by a section in stark harmonies.
