Basically, any trash that gets dumped in the water rides the currents to this one spot and joins an ever-increasing flotilla of crap. For all the breathless accounts of the mess and its impact on the area's sealife, however, no one seemed to have a picture of the buildup. In order to sate our own curiosity, VBS joined the crew of a research vessel studying the trash and sailed out into one of the most remote spots of open water in the world, the North Pacific Gyre, in search of this mythical garbage island. What we discovered once we got there was an ecological disaster beyond any of our expectations and possibly the single worst thing human beings have done to the planet and ourselves. The center of the North Pacific Gyre is a relatively stationary region of the Pacific Ocean (the area it occupies is often referred to as the horse latitudes). The circular rotation around it draws waste material in and has led to the accumulation of flotsam and other debris. While historically this debris has biodegraded, the gyre is now accumulating vast quantities of plastic and marine debris. Rather than biodegrading, plastic photodegrades, disintegrating in the ocean into smaller and smaller pieces. These pieces, still polymers, eventually become individual molecules, which are still not easily digested.[1] Some plastics photodegrade into other pollutants. The gyre is discussed in Alan Weisman's The World Without Us as an example of the near-indestructibility of discarded plastic. [Mas+detalle]

Now in the heart of the North Pacific Gyre, Marcus and Joel begin trawling for plastic debris aboard JUNK - an oceangoing raft built from 15,000 plastic bottles. [Mas+detalle]

This sample was taken from the surface of the ocean 1500 miles from the nearest land by the Algalita Marine Research Foundation. It illustrates how vast the pollution that we are causing is, and should act as a wake up call to all of us. [Mas+detalle]

The Gyre Falcons play "Twitch of the Death Nerve" in this documentary clip from the movie "The Miskatonic Acid Test". The Gyre Falcons were one of the quintessential groups representing the late '60's "Arkham Sound", and their single, "Twitch of the Death Nerve" was a fiery blast of antiwar fury.
