The Large Hadron Collider is the largest and most complex scientific instrument ever built and the highest energy particle accelerator in the world. The accelerator is located 100 m underground and runs through both French and Swiss territory. ( 27km circumference) Year 2008 September 10th, marks the culmination of 20 years of work by over 8000 scientists thousands of engineers, technicians and support staff from over 80 different countries. some critics say that this could create a black hole and suck up the entire world..but many say that even if a black hole is created it will wannish within a millionth of a second.. Latest : they have successfully done the 1st testing on the 10th September 2008, sending 2 beams separately clockwise and anticlockwise, which had successfully gone all the way around the ring. but there had been some minor errors, which we dont have to worry about. ***due to a helium leak, the LHC wont be re-started till 2009. for more info follow these links. A simulated collision event viewed along the beampipe. The event is one in which a mini-blackhole was produced and decayed immediately. The black area in the center with many particle tracks represents the inner detector (pixel detector, semiconductor tracker, and transition radiation tracker), which has been enormously magnified relative to the rest of the detector (in this view) . The colors of the thin tracks have no significance. The thick yellow lines are the two electrons in this event. The green area is the electromagnetic calorimeter, while the red area is the hadronic calorimeter. The green and red histograms show the energy deposits by particles in the electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters. Cuenta con una serie de aceleradores de partículas entre los que destaca el, ya desmantelado, LEP (Large Electron-Positron Collider, Gran Colisionador Electrón-Positrón) de 27 km de circunferencia y que constituye la máquina más grande jamás construida. En esta ocasión la serie de National Geographic, Superestructuras o Megaestructuras, se centra además de nociones de las funciones astrofísicas del CERN y LHC, en la constucción científica más grande de la Historia. Donde grandísimos imanes, sensores y detectores, estarán atentos a nuevos descubrimientos de nuevas partículas que podrían darnos un giro de 180º sobre las teorías cosmológicas actuales.
